Day:1
Yangon – Pyay
Pick up at your hotel in Yangon. Five hours car journey to Pyay, north west of Yangon. Pyay is situated at the confluence of the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River and Nawin River. Late afternoon tour in Pyay including China town and market, and Shwesandaw Pagoda on a hillock from where you can see a beautiful view. Overnight in Pyay.
Day:2
Pyay – Akauk Mountain – Pyay
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive from Pyay to Htone Bo Village from where we take a short boat ride to reach Akauk Mountain. The view of hundreds of Buddha images curved on the cliff of Akauk mountain which can be seen from the boat is marvelous. The cliff is also accessible by a short trek. Return to Pyay. Overnight in Pyay.
Day:3
Pyay – Hmawza Village – Pyay – Yangon
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Hmawza Village located 8 km south of Pyay. This village has the ruins of the existence of Sri Ksetra. There is a small museum which exhibits the artifacts of Sri Ksetra era between 500 and 900 AD. If you prefer, you can take a 2 hour bullock cart ride service provided by the locals to look around the ruined city of Sri Ksetra. Back to Pyay and return to Yangon.
Alternate Route:
There are 2 -3 flights between Yangon and Loikaw by Myanmar Airway domestic flights. If there is a flight departing to Yangon from Loikaw, you can take flights to Yangon directly from Loikaw.

Pyay
Pyay (also known as Prome), is situated at the confluence of Ayerwaddy and Nawin Rivers, 290 Km north of Yangon and 8 km from Hmawzar Village, a UNESCO Heritage site in Myanmar. It is on the eastern bank of Ayeyerwaddy River and has fertile land. Rice, peanut, cottons, tobacco, sesame seed and toddy palm are grown in the area. The name Pyay (pronounced as Pyi) means country in Burmese language. It also refers to the ruins of the Pyu capital, Sri Ksetra (“City of Splendour in Sanskrit), in today’s Hmawza Village. The British Irrawaddy Flotilla Company established the current town in the late 19th century on the Ayeyarwady River (Irrawaddy River) as a transhipment point for cargo between Upper and Lower Burma.
The Shwesandaw Pagoda (The Sacred Hair Relic Shrine), in the centre of Pyay, is one of the more important Buddhist pilgrimage locations in Burma. It is one meter taller in height than Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. It also reflects the retrospective glory of the town.
Mingyi Taung (Hill of King) is where the story or Sri Ksetra began. It is the birth place of Beydayi whose son, King Duttabaung established an ancient Pyu capital of Sriketra (1 to 5 AD).
Hmawza Village (a UNESCO Heritage Site in Myanmar)
Hmawza Village is situated 8 km south of Pyay. The ruins of the Pyu capital, Sri Ksetra (“City of Splendour in Sanskrit) in this village is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Myanmar (please make sure these words are linked to the weblink enclosed in hyperlink). There is a well organised small museum is a great start before you visit the old ruin and archaeological site within the village. Since 2014, Sri Ksetra (today’s Hmawza Village) has been declared one of Myanmar’s first UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Myanmar along with two other Pyu Cities of Hanlin and Beikthano. For those interested in the history and archeology, a visit to Hmawza could enhanced your experience to the visit to Pyay and Hmawza.
