Putao
Putao (457 meters above sea level) is situated in North of Myanmar, lies in a flat valley, famous as a jumping-off point for trekkers who want to explore the region’s deep forests, wildlife sanctuaries and snowcapped mountains. It is the base town and the gate way to Myanmar Himalayas for travellers who would like to enjoy the scenic leisurely atmosphere, to explore the rich culture of indigenous tribes, rich ecosystem, biodiversity, wildlife, rafting, trekking and climbing expeditions.
Hunting, foraging medicinal herbs, mining and gold panning are typical ways of life for the local people. The charm of Putao is differ from other destinations and sites in Myanmar. This Northern Myanmar’s treasure in Kachin State has so much to offer to its travellers.
Namhtunkoo
A large Lisu village situate about 20 km west of Putao on the cross road to blazing 11530 ft, 3515 meters high Mt. Lancrumadin is one of the prominent mountains is the area is a perfect overnight trek from Putao.
Mulashidi
Meaning in Lisu “the village stands in the thatch field along Mula River” 13 km away from Putao, a beautiful settlement next to 159 meter long Mulashidi suspension bridge.
Namkham
Originally by Hkamti Shan name meaning “Golden River”, has become the centre of cultivation place for the fruits that first missionary team have introduced thus to day famous for its sweet fruits production. Located on the bank of Malikha river at the bottom of Namhti mountain range, enrich with biodiversity of flora and fauna.
Machanbaw
A small administrative town, located 22 km away from Putao across Malikha river, beautifully set up with colonial style, connected by 213 meter long Malikha suspension bridge.
Brief Itinerary
Day – 1 (Tuesday/ Sunday): Putao (arrival).
Day – 2 (Wednesday/ Monday): Trek to Namhtunkoo.
Day – 3 (Thursday/ Tuesday): Trek to Mulashidi, jeep transfer to Putao.
Day – 4 (Friday/ Wednesday): Jeep to Htawadum, explore Kaungmulon and trek to Namkham.
Day – 5 (Saturday/ Thursday): Trek to Machanbaw for an excursion, boat trip to NatKyun, jeep transfer to Putao
Day – 6 (Sunday/ Friday): Putao – onward journey.

Detailed Itinerary
Day – 1 (Tuesday/ Sunday): Putao (arrival)
Upon arrival at Putao airport you will be met by Putao Trekking House’s representative and transferred to your guest house. Putao lies in a flat valley, jumping-off point for trekkers who want to explore the region’s deep forests, wildlife sanctuaries and snow-capped mountains etc. After a brief fresh up take a walk around Putao for the orientation. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge. (_, _, D)
Day – 2 (Wednesday/ Monday): Namhtunkoo (trek)
Early in the morning walk to Putao market (approx 10 minute), visit attractive market often busy with local ethnic tribes. Return to hotel, breakfast and head off towards Namhtunkoo Lisu village, situates west of Putao on the cross road to Mt. Lancrumadin (20 km, approx 5 hours). Walk through cultivation field passing some small villages and farm land. After about one hour walkingon the flat land you are immediately in to wildness with lush tropical evergreen forests. About 3 hours trek through the terrain up hill you reach approx 2250 ft, 680 meters shoulder of Namhtun mountain range from where the path descends all the way. Far west you will see blazing 11530 ft, 3495 meters high Lancrumadin Mountain towards Indian border. Lunch stop and continue trek another one more hour through the farm land to the village. Check in at a designated home and heading to Namhtun creek, usually busy during the late afternoon by local on their return home from field. Dinner and overnight at village house in dormitory style. Day – 3 (Thursday/ Tuesday): Namhtunkoo – Mulashidi – Putao (trek/jeep)
Breakfast and visit around the village for social and cultural inter-action. Bit farewell to the locals and walk about 45 minutes through the field along Namhtun creek crossing the creek a couple of time. Once you get in to the wildness the terrain immediate become deep up which leads up to 2295 ft, 700 meters. After about 2 hour through quite strenuous jungle trail in dense forest filled with bamboo grove the trek gradually descend through farm land from where we enjoy a spectacular view of the Putao plain with snake like crawling Mula creek. Lunch stop and further a couple of hour’s easy trek to arrive at Mulashidi village. Enjoy beautiful surrounding often back drop with snow-capped mountains in distance. Join your jeep and return back to Putao and check in at hotel. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge. (B, L, D)
Day – 4 (Friday/ Wednesday): Putao – Htawadum – Namkham (jeep/trek)
Early in the morning walk to Putao market (approx 10 minute), visit attractive market often busy with local ethnic tribes. Return to hotel, breakfast and depart by jeep/truck through the vast Putao plain on pebbled road to Htawadum (14 km, approx one hour). Cross Malikha River by suspension bridge to visit famous Kanugmulon Pagoda, said to be one of the 84000 pagodas built by Thiri Dhamma Thawka, the great king. Proceed walking toward Salundum but turn to Nampandum from Lona suspension bridge. Lunch stop and continue walk to Namkham (5 km, approx 3 hours) along smaller villages such as Salundum and Htrandum etc. Namkham, a large Rawang village, situates at the bottom of Namhti mountain range which in rich with biodiversity of flora and fauna. Name after Hkamti Shan name meaning “Golden River” has become the centre of cultivation place for the fruits that Father Robert Moss has introduced thus to day famous for its sweet fruits production. Settle in at your village house and walk around the village. Dinner and overnight at village house. (B, L, D)
Day – 5 (Saturday/ Thursday): Namkham – Machanbaw – Nat Kyun – Putao (trek/ boat/jeep)
Breakfast and start walk to Machanbaw (15 km, approx 6 hours) through relatively low land terrain with occasionally ups and downs passing through some smaller villages such as Inwaingbaw and Inbubaw. Machanbaw is a small administrative town ex-Putao with beautifully set up colonial style town. Lunch stop here and visit so-called “stone dragon” park which should take about 20 minute walk and cross a suspension bridge spans across Malikha river to Naungkhine. Board on local fishermen boat and leisurely cruise down in the Malikha River enjoying the sites and sounds of the natural environment. This part of the river journey is one of the most beautiful spots in the wilderness world having high reef with lush tropical evergreen forests. Pack lunch at the sand bank and afternoon return up stream by boat to Naungkhine jetty and jeep transfer back to hotel. Dinner and overnight at Putao Lodge. (B, L, D)
Day – 6 (Sunday/ Friday): Putao (departure) – onward journey
Breakfast and perhaps a last minute shopping at Putao market and further visit in and around Putao with suggestion by your guide. Lunch and afternoon transfer to airport for your onward departure flight to conclude this unique experience. (B, L, _)
